Copernicus data in action, 10 Hackathons across Europe!

A series of ten Copernicus Hackathons will be organised across Europe from the end of September. These Hackathons will gather the most technically creative minds of Europe to develop new software prototypes that make use of Copernicus data.

Developing web applications and useful software is not just about knowing how programming languages work; the real skill lies in using that technical knowledge to solve real-world problems in different creative ways. Web developers, computer programmers, graphic designers and entrepreneurs are all considered, by nature, as creative people.

One of the best places for them to explore and challenge their creativity against real-world problems in a fun environment are hackathons. Hackathons are typically a 24 or 48h non-stop coding and development-fest for developing creative problem-solving and innovative solutions using available data and responding to specific challenges.

The European Commission (EC) continuously experiments with innovation through different programmes to contribute to growth and jobs and to the development of the EU´s technical edge. In this context, it launched the Copernicus Start-up programme, an initiative to stimulate the generation of new business ideas based on Copernicus data and services. The programme is working on developing and reinforcing an industry that is currently undergoing a disruptive phase by developing new applications and uses for Earth Observation data. And thus, the Copernicus Hackathons.

The Hackathons have been designed as intense events where participants such as developers, coders, students, programmers and other people with creative profiles (and not necessarily technical knowledge) collaborate in small teams on the development of prototypes of new software based on Copernicus Earth Observation data. These software prototypes tackle societal challenges such as climate change or natural disasters. Ten Hackathons, each with a different thematic area (Air, Smart Cities, Safe food, etc.) will take place across Europe starting in September.

Check the list of upcoming hackathons and pick the one that suits you best in terms of location and thematic area:

  • #1 in Leiden, The Netherlands (29-30 September). Registration is open.
Topics: Earth Water and Air. You can join the first Copernicus Hackathon and promote your ideas.
  • #2 in Bratislava, Slovakia (6-7 October).
