Advancing hydrological services through collaboration - The Conference will provide decision-makers and practitioners with an holistic picture of the initiatives and solutions offered by international organizations and their partners for improving the quality and availability of hydrological services. Interested parties may express their intention to engage in partnerships or provide support for the initiatives.

The WMO Global Conference: Prosperity through Hydrological Services is a catalyst for collaboration among initiatives that are aimed at increasing the availability and use of hydrological services worldwide. It is a platform for establishing closer links among water communities, providers of hydrological products and information, and decision-makers to increase the recognition and use of hydrological services for safety and prosperity.

Objectives

The Conference seeks to create better interfaces between hydrological service providers and decision-makers, in turn generating increased societal benefits. The primary objective of the Conference is:

Collaboration for improved hydrological services: To highlight the importance of collaboration across sectors, scales and actors, aiming at elevating the visibility and recognition of socio-economic benefits emerging from tailored affordable hydrological services that shape and meet the needs of policy and decision-makers. This will allow the exploitation of synergies, while triggering sustainable funding of such hydrological services.

The Conference will also demonstrate how the efforts of Members to enhance hydrological knowledge can contribute to meeting the Sustainable Development Goal #6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Background

The importance placed on the availability, management and protection of water by the Nations of the world is growing. This is reflected in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development endorsed in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly, which established the SDGs; the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030; the Paris Agreement that entered into force in 2016; and the International Decade for Action, "Water for Sustainable Development", which will kick off in March 2018. Combined, these policies mark a dramatic positive recognition of the role that water plays and will increasingly play on the national, regional and global scale.
